Red Shoes - why are they so loved ?

Red Shoes - I love them with wild abandon, for some reason I am drawn to them - why ?

"When I am an old woman I shall wear red
With a purple hat which doesn't go and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick the flowers in other people's gardens . .
But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear red"

We are talking about a state of mind, about the way you feel, or the person you want to be, when we ask the question, why do women love shoes? In particular, why such a passion for Red Shoes ? Scientists have finally made a breakthrough, tackling this important issue thats close to the hearts of many people:
“Why do women wear red shoes?”
Dr Elaine Webster, a Sociologist from Otago University, New Zealand has spent six months asking why women wear red shoes. And, she has concluded that young women wear them for excitement, and out of a desire to be noticed; whilst most men associate red shoes with sex and sin.  Dr Webster, whose long term interest is “dress and identity” conducted the research after being impressed with the way that women spoke about their red shoes. She said:
" Women, and some men wear red shoes because they’re really wanting a richer and more exciting life than the one they are living. " Many of the women interviewed made a connection between their red shoes and Red Shoes, the film of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale, or Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz.
Dr Webster believes footwear, more than any other items of clothing, has a special quality in our lives. And red shoes are a way to lift you out of a drab and ordinary existence.

We have many women come into our little shoe shop that have never owned a pair of red shoes. You can see them processing whether or not they should buy them, what would people think, what could they wear them with, and if they could really carry them off ? Once you jump into your first pair, there is no turning back, you will end up with a collection in many fabulous shades, and you will think - why didnt I do this sooner?

There are many red shoe quotes around, and popular belief is that you can never have a bad day if you are wearing a pair of red shoes, most women would agree, wearing red shoes is not for shrinking violets. They are for women who refuse to surrender to a crappy mood, who dont take themselves too seriously, who want a party on their feet, and be the one enjoying that party. Women who beleive it is their right to have fun and not let anyone get them down - try a pair of red shoes - seriously - they do change the way you feel - in a positive way.

Some inspiration to go out and get into a pair of Red Shoes :

When in doubt, wear red. Red is the ultimate cure for sadness.” –Bill Blass

If you’re not a wearer of red shoes, do you have another article of footwear or clothing that wakes you up and makes your heart sing? – Cindy La Ferle

"If one says 'Red' – the name of color – and there are fifty people listening, it can be expected that there will be fifty reds in their minds. And one can be sure that all these reds will be very different." -- Josef Albers

"My red shoes make me feel great, I looooove my red shoes", is what you here women say. You almost never would hear, " I love my brown shoes. "

Tips for making the most of your New Red Shoes :
  • Remember our cost per wear rule  http://shoesonscarborough.blogspot.com/2011/07/cost-per-wear-rule_28.html - wear the shoes, dont make excuses, just get out there with them on your feet !
  • Be friends with your Red Shoes - BFF's forever.
  • Wear grey or black if your taking them to the office. And no, you wont look like the office tart, Red shoes look extremely professional.
  • Less is more, make the shoes the colourful part of your outfit, especially the first few times you go out into the world with your new bestie.
  • Over time you will find that red goes with almost everything. Just add some red lipstick, maybe a red handbag or a braclet or earings to bring the outfit all together. Jeans in all shades, white pants skirts and so on all work.
  • With Red you can achieve many of different looks, from summer frilly flowers to Burlesque babe. And everything in between, enjoy yourself, be creative and most importantly, an ensemble worn proudly, with confidence canalways be pulled off. So get out there proudly with your new best friend and work it. Enjoy life, be free and love yourself.

So whats on your mind when someone says Red Shoes ?

A History of the Wedge Heel Shoe

What is a Wedge heel:  A wedge shoe has a triangular heel that runs from the front of the foot to the back, rather than sitting just under the heel. We often see them with a range of platform heights under the foot-ball as well, further raising or flatening out the footbed.
Benefits: Wedge heels are sturdier and more comfortable than the typical high heel. They create an illusion of longer legs and thinner ankles, and better support the arch of the foot. And the artworkability is endless.
Thankyou Mr Salvatore Ferragamo for bringing us the wedge heeled shoe ! In 1936 Italian designer, Ferragamo, invented the wedge heel. Over the next decade he then used this heal on many shoes styles, from sandals to pumps and ankle boots.

He was known  as the "shoe maker to the stars" after he moved to Hollywood the United States at the age of 16, specialising in custom-made designs with pure opulence. The master of improvision, he used any object or mateial to help achieve the vision for the shoe he was designing. From Spanish shawls to Chineese brocade, or fabric off a brocade chair. He was known to use hummingbird feathers, tree bark and other materials sourced from nature.

Ferragamo also developed the orthopedic wedge, by sculpting two pieces of wood onto an "F" shape, shown here in this 1944 creation. Dutch designer Jan Jansen took the floating wedge further.
Today's designers are inspired by masters like Ferragamo and technology has made the current wedges much lighter and more comfortable, like this masterpiece by Sempre Di.

Perhaps the earliest form of wedge/platform was a "chopine" worn in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. Venetian husbands reputedly introduced heavy wooden chopines to prevent their wives from straying. My gosh, what lengths some men will go to stop their wives straying into beautiful shoe shops to buy shoes they could dance all night in. I think thats what that means, anyway, thankfully our models are much more reasonable to wear ?? And husbands today absolutely love it when we spend lots of money on Shoes Shoes Shoes ! Oh no thats right, thats all secret womens business - hehe

More awesome wedge pictures, to follow.

Fashion and function - yeehaa cowboy !

I have this pair of boots (below) they are a fashionable, cowboy look with a bit of flair stitched into the sides. Recently I had the amazing pleasure of going on a beach to bush horse ride.

When we arrived, we had a boot inspection! I was thinking that my fashionable EOS boots would not cut the mustard in serious riding circles. Much to my surprise the gals at "Equathon" not only said they were suitable, they loved them - woohoo. Well, as you can see they certainly got a good working out over the two hour ride, and are now looking a bit worse for wear. I am sure they will scrub up fine !
This is another tick for the "cost per wear rule" (post from 28/7/11), once they are all cleaned up I can wear these out shopping again. Or maybe I should buy a pair of the Thomas Cook ones, I did fair better than I thought I would on the ride and I am probably going to go riding again soon. Yep, I am sure I can get value out of a new pair of real riding boots.

The EOS "Billie" boot the way its suppose to look, currently for sale through our website -

Thomas Cook "Trentham" riding boots, in store all year round, we love them, this is the brand that did the awesome gumboot shown in the 24/7/11 post. We hope they are doing more gumboots for next winter.

Thanks to the lovely people at Equathon for a great day out, if you havent done it yourself check them out - http://www.equathon.com/

Bling in the Garden

These beauties are an old pair of Django and Juliette sandles I have, and love. They are no longer fit for wearing out in public, however I have moved them into my "house" shoe range. These are now my gardening sandles, or, selecting veges from our vege garden shoes, to be more accurate! I have certainly exercised the Cost-per-wear rule (post from the 28/7/2011).
By moving them into my house shoe range I get even more wears per shoe, Im so clever!

Absolutely no reason why you can't wear a bit of bling whilst gardening, I say. x

Alice in Wonderland

In my travels today I happened upon a magic land. It's a mixture of the Mad Hatters Tea Party, Willy Wonka's, and Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium all wrapped into one. How exciting, a wonderland of sweets! The shop is a work in progress but I think its pretty great so far, you decide for yourself. "Variety Treats" is new and is on the Redcliffe Esplanade, pop in and say hi to Yvonne. It was my inspiration to wear one of each colour of these amazing wedges. I think I am channeling Helena Bonham Carter, well thats my excuse for being crazy anyway. You feel like you can have a lot of fun in this shop, and I did.

Pop in and have High Tea, great sandwhiches and cakes (with real cream).

Amazing sweets selection, that takes you back to your childhood !

The childrens space is still under artists brush and will be great when finished.

There was an old Woman who lived in a Shoe .....

The original...

"There was an old woman who lived in a shoe, she had so many children she didn't know what to do. She gave them some broth without any bread. She whipped them all soundly and put them to bed."

My version....

"There was a (youngish) woman who had children of two, she had so many shoes she didn't know what to do. She couldn't afford food, so she only ate bread. She cleaned the shoes lovingly and slept with them in bed."

I may have a problem. These are just my 'casuals'.

All is Fair in Love and War.

We have received so many boxes of new stock that we have to climb over them to get around the stock room. We have been peeking in the boxes and trying them on. We are falling in love over and over. There are a few we all have our hearts set on. It might be a fight to the death. Lucky, I am pretty scrappy but I think some others might fight dirty. On a lighter note, we have organised our first online competition. We have a beautiful pair of Tilly Rose sandals up for grabs on our facebook page www.facebook.com/ShoesOnScarborough. Very pretty. Sadly, I am not allowed to enter. These gorgeous, suede, platforms followed me home on Friday. I love the laced-up detail at the back. I think I'll have to keep them.

Pretty feet Pretty please ?

There are people that think their feet are beautiful, some that think their feet are unattractive and others that feel they are just Ok. I wonder if a lot of males fall into the first category? There are some men in my life like this. One balmy night, one gentleman, so sure of his perfect feet, proudly removed his shoes hoping to awe us with their beauty. I still remember the smug and superior expression on his face as he prepared to "sweep us off our feet". We giggled at his less than perfect feet. Don't feel pity for him, he is still happily living in denial. I also have a female family member in this category, I love her too much to say much, just let me say one thing.... monkey toes. But, in the second group, there are so many ladies that shouldn't be there. After spending many hours helping lots of lovely, ladies trying on shoes, you would be surprised how many think they have unusually, unattractive feet. You don't. You should "put your foot down" and be out and proud. And, if you still doubt it, heel balm and a pedicure does wonders to make you feel better. Even better, the lovely ladies at "Beautiful You Hair and Beauty" in Margate can do wonders. Visit their website for more information at http://www.beautifulu.com.au/. They were just telling me about their gel toe nails and their shellac polish. I think I am going to treat myself to the mini pedi and shellac polish.

Boots, Baby !

Seriously!! What is the story with this weather? I had already emotionally
moved on from my boots and was drooling about all the delicious, strappy
sandals I was planning to adopt. My boots are back with a vengeance. That should be the title of a movie "BOOTS BACK WITH A VENGEANCE!", I would watch it. Well, I would watch it in winter, certainly not a summer blockbuster. I would even be in it, if they asked nicely. People have been going crazy in the shop buying up winter boots, lucky we have winter stock 50%. Last week, crazy summer buying - this week, crazy winter buying. Can't pick it. What next week? Maybe snow boots or flippers? Or these? We don't actually have these in the shop, so please don't rush down all excited, you'll look a little silly.

Giddy - Up ! The Breaking of an Innocent Shoe.

Breaking in a pair of shoes. What a terrible term!! Makes you think of
horses being broken or, your poor, little heels being tortured by new
shoes. I have tried too many times over the years to "break shoes in" and it always ends in my tears. Does vanity make me choose a smaller size than I should have? Am I like Cinderella's step-sister trying to shove her ugly, man foot in the glass slipper? Probably. Now, I usually buy my shoes half a size larger and I haven't had heel blisters in years. Sure, I might not fit the glass slipper but at least I can dance all night. These are my version of glass slippers. I could dance all night in these gorgeous Vers Couture slippers.

Feet don't have fat days.

This is another reason I love shoes. It doesn't matter if my hair looks greasy, my face is spotty or none of my clothes are working, my shoes will fit. There was a brief period of time when I was pregnant that they turned against me, but they came back and haven't turned on me since. Not only did they re-build the trust they destroyed, they have increased it. I think they should be rewarded. I was thinking of these delightful, little babies, They are screaming "Spring is coming, get a pedicure". Summer stock has started arriving in the Scarborough store and we are enthusiastically opening the boxed and giggling gleefully.

We have also started marking down all the stock on the website, We'll be busy next week making more mark downs and adding stock. http://www.shoesonscarborough.com.au/

Cost-per-wear Rule.

We are sure you have your own version of this great rule. I can pretty much convince myself that I can buy any shoe if it falls within the boundaries of the cost-per-wear (CPW) rule. Here is a simple version of CPW - I buy beautiful stilettos for $200 but only wear them once, then the cost per wear is $200. But, if I took those stilettos and wore them once a week (even for five minutes) for a year, the CPW is only a measly $3.846 (or $1.923 each). Then, if I continue wearing them for another 2 years - they are almost free. What a bargain!! See, there is a great reason that I wear slightly inappropriate shoes and will continue to do so. This is a pair that I am struggling to achieve CPW. Be prepared to see me stumbling though the school sometime soon. Xxx

No Shoe Left Behind

I have made a deal with myself and I can only buy shoes for next season. This has been more difficult than I anticipated. We have a sale on winter shoes in store (www.shoesonscarborough.com.au) and there are a few boots that I have been admiring for a while. I wonder if I am breaking my silent deal if I focus on next winter? Probably. In the meantime, I have promised some special shoes that I'll give them a few outings. I always feel sorry for the ones left forgotten in the back of the cupboard. I always say "No shoe left behind". So, these lovely, little babies came out with me today. Luz da lua, shoe boots. They skipped upstairs, strutted along sidewalks, ran through the school and sat patiently under my desk. What good little shoes they are!
